robbuckland.com I can't believe it's been five months since I wrote my last page! Life has been incredibly hectic! I've been playing all over the world, with all sorts of groups: Mexico City and Milan with the Michael Nyman Band, Sicily with London Saxophonic, Luxembourg, Scotland, Manchester and recording a new CD with my Equivox Trio, recording a demo CD version of Andy Scott's new Dark Rain Double Sax Concerto with John Harle, concerts with all sorts of orchestras and ensembles, big bands and jazz groups, and a week on TV with a fantastic band on Granada TV's "Soapstar Superstar"! I've also had the privilege of working with conductor/arranger John Wilson, on shows with the Halle and RLPO, performing the original full studio-orchestra/big band arrangements of Frank Sinatra tunes - what a real joy to play these stunning arrangements with such great players. And the Apollo Saxophone Quartet has just finished a block of work including two gigs at the fantastic Gateshead Sage, and a couple of performances of a great new concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Wind Orchestra by Bill Connor. Bill has been a friend of the ASQ for many years now, having written a major Concerto for the group 12 years ago, and wrote this new piece as a 70th Birthday tribute to Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. The members of the group have also arranged four pieces from Richard's film and chamber music to complement his Saxophone Quartet written for us in 1994, and these pieces are featuring in our current 2006 programmes during his 70th year. We have also given two more performances with the Goldberg String Ensemble, in Nottingham and Bristol, playing the concertos by Barbara Thompson and Graham Fitkin. (Oh, and I've moved house in the middle of all this too!!!) I am writing this in France, having just finished three 15 hour days of mixing and editing my new CD with my Equivox Trio (with Peter Lawson [piano] and Simone Rebello [percussions]), with Tim Redpath [ASQ Soprano player], who recorded the sessions and has done a fantastic job with the whole process - if anyone needs a recording of the highest quality making, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, give Tim a call (horizonmusicproduction.com) - a special mention must go to Claire, Tim's lovely wife, for her wonderful home cooked cuisine and constant supply of wine during my stay at their house/studio in France!!! What better way to work! All being well, the disc should be available from my website in the next few months, and features music by Jason Rebello, Barbara Thompson, Bob Mintzer, Bill Connor, Pat Metheny, Barry Cockcroft, Samei Satoh, Sheilah Chandrah and myself. I'm absolutely over the moon with how it's turned out and can't wait to see and hear the finished product!! Check out the astute-music.com website for some new music that I have written with Andy Scott - a new book of studies "Changing Times", and a new ASQ Sax and Piano book - and a whole list of our existing music has been signed onto the Associated Board syllabus, and is shortly to be included on the Guildhall and Trinity syllabuses. I've also just finished new versions of some of our most popular compositions for Clarinet, so tell your clarinet playing friends! There are four books in total - Café Europa, Changing Times, Solo Clarinet Studies, and the ASQ Clarinet and Piano Book, with two books of duets follow soon. I'm sure you are all aware of the forthcoming World Saxophone Congress in Slovenia in July. I shall be playing with both Sax Assault and as soloist with John Harle in the European premiere of Andy Scott's "Dark Rain" with the Slovenian Army Band. It sounds like loads of UK Saxophonists are going out to this event, so I'm sure it'll be a great occasion. Also coming up is my International Summer School in Woldingham (22-28 July) (see summermusic.org.uk for info and booking) and the Harrogate Saxophone Summer School (20-24th August) check out Andy's website andyscott.org.uk for links for this one. I look forward to hearing from you - keep the emails coming - and hopefully seeing some of you at gigs/summer schools in the future. Stay healthy and happy and keep blowin'!
